Chapter 18

The Columbia show was small, but also energetic. Before they played, lots of the young kids thanked Nate for playing there. They often drove to Atlanta to see shows, because most touring bands skipped over them. The crowd knew all of the four songs from Myspace and sang along quite nicely as they played.

Nate focused on the songs, and forgot everything else. All the drama before the set melted away, at least during the show. Scott was still feeding back, looking at him as if he was ready to play more. They had played every song they knew. Ericka was already unplugged and wrapping up her cord.

Nate stepped off the stage, high-fiving a few people who waited to pat him on the shoulder and tell him he played a good show. He couldn’t hear it. As soon as they were done, Nate instantly worried about the status of the journal.

Dripping with sweat, Nate walked out into what should have been hot summer air. After playing a show, it felt like standing in front of an AC unit. He should have helped, and normally he did, but they all took nights off from loading here and there.

He turned just enough to watch with one eye as they unloaded the equipment. He wanted to see if anyone went near his bag or looked under the seat. They moved quickly. They all wanted to start the drive to Gainesville.

They had lots of friends in Gainesville, as the scene there was filled with traveling punk kids.

The question was how many of them would be in town. Most left Florida for the summer, living there full time only in the winter months. When the van appeared packed Nate pointed at the bench. He often deferred dibs on it, but he had his reasons tonight.

The whole drive, he stared at the passenger seat. He wanted to read the journal. He hadn’t skipped ahead before, wanting to preserve the mystery. To make the journey together.

The journal sensed his desire. He didn’t understand how. He didn’t care either but it was taking him back. The van or the journal probably both was putting him into Frank’s skin, giving him the chance to relive that time. The era he was always meant to live in.

Now that Ericka challenged him, a part of him had to know what was there. The great mystery of what happened to Frank Fucker could have been there all along. They rode towards Florida and Denny started the conversation talking about the shows. How they could move songs around and keep the energy level up. His mind was on other things but Nate knew he had to act normal. So he engaged.

“We have to keep the opener and closer the same, maybe a cover song in the middle.” He smiled and watched Ericka melt. He didn’t remember her being so easy to manipulate. He knew what she was thinking: Old Nate, whimpy push-over Nate.

Ericka loved that version of him. She leaned up against him and hugged him.
